Why do girls always tell me they have a boyfriend 3 hours before they sleep with me?

I always respond with something like "well that's good, you'll have someone to entertain you while I'm away", and then that's usually the last it's spoken of, but I am just curious what this particular test/mind-game is about. Are women deluded enough to think that men care whether or not they have a boyfriend?
