Can the umbilical cord be wrapped around the baby's neck in early pregnancy?

My girlfriend is 15 weeks pregnant and she is having a lot of stomach discomfort and tightness in her lower abdomen. She is getting worried about the baby so I wanted to ask here if the cord can be wrapped this early and if so what the signs of it would be.
