For ps3 games is it best to leave them at 720p or upscale them?

i have a 1080p hdtv, and i was wondering if i left it a 720p will i be missing out or not?or does upscaling make the picture worse screen stretching idk what that is, and some games look better in 1080 from what i heard, but whats the deal here??
