Meaning of "from the trenches" ; from a book that says American parents raise children who are losers?

Im Indian and I agree with chua. Indian parents are also tough and ambitious. If the indian govt were not corrupt, India would not be a third world country. Indian parents want their kids to be "all rounders"; i.e., good in academics, sports and extra curricular activities. I never had tiger parents. I made some mistakes but wisened up, better late than never.
