Why are us brits always portrayed as posh/rich?

Because of American movies and Hugh Grant, like you said. If you watch films like This Is England, they do portray the working cl very well, they are extremely good films. But gritty realistic films about violence in Britain aren't as popular as Hugh Grant as his "British charm".
